Suru

Suru is a Finnish word for sorrow.

The first time I heard Eira’s song “sink” I was drawn to it very intensely, and the movements started to come to me just by themselves. At first I was going to dance this piece only for myself, totally private, as a personal grief process, but after a while I realized that the choreography had become quite nice, so I felt it would be a pity just to do it all alone in a studio.

Suru is a piece about sad things, something I think everybody can relate to in different ways, to sorrow, lost, trauma and other that kind of things. There is plenty of sorrow in the world, and hopefully, as a grief process, this dance piece could also start to heal something in someone else, somewhere or maybe someday, at least a bit.
